Suggested Assignments for Peer Buddy

We recommend that you check the students' journals each week to encourage them to make entries on a daily basis. This is also a valuable way for you to identify any questions or concerns that they may have.

You may choose to assign additional reports once in a six week period to encourage the students to research aspects of the field of special education and learn more about various disabilities. Included are some sample ideas for writing assignments which teachers in the Metro School System have used. The student handbook could serve as a primary resource or you may supplement with materials you have available. If your students have access to the Internet, there are wonderful resources available from various agencies, parent support groups and advocacy groups.

Suggested Writing Assignments

  • A report about a specific disability type (e.g., Down Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy)

  • A case study on a student with disabilities with whom the student has been working

  • A report on the advantages of the peer buddy program for both the peer buddy and the partner

  • A report on experiences as a peer buddy

  • An essay entitled "How Students with Disabilities Are Like Me"

  • A chance to teach the class for a day

  • An editorial to the school newspaper about an important issue in special education
